The West Ham United defender fits the profile outlined by Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay.
Sheffield Wednesday are ‘leading the chase’ to sign West Ham United defender Reece Burke on loan, according to the Daily Mirror.
Wednesday have released Glenn Loovens and seen Frederico Venancio return to Vitoria de Setubal, creating a vacancy at the heart of their back line.
And while Venancio could still move to Hillsborough, after both the player and Owls boss Jos Luhukay expressed a desire to finalise a permanent deal this summer, an approach for Burke would be plausible if not – given Luhukay’s comments on recruitment last month.
“I think it is very important to look in the Championship for typical players. They know the league, they know the culture, they know the way that you can play in the Championship,” the Dutchman said via Sheffield Wednesday’s official Facebook page.
“Also I think we must look to the under-23s of big clubs in the Premier League, where you also have players with high dynamic, with a high spirit but also ones who can maybe develop in the future, first maybe they must take one step back and after maybe they can go a step forwards.”
Being on the fringes of West Ham’s first team and having played second tier football for Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers in recent campaigns, Burke ticks both of those boxes.
However, Sheffield Wednesday could face a battle to land the 21-year-old, with Rangers, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Reading ready to make permanent offers for the West Ham academy product, according to the Daily Mirror.
Wednesday’s neighbours Sheffield United were among the clubs linked with a January move for Burke, although the Blades are not mentioned in the Mirror’s latest report.
