Rui Silva has coached in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers but could he break away from Nuno Espirito Santo to join The Owls?
Sheffield Wednesday have identified Wolverhampton Wanderers’ head coach Rui Silva as a potential option to replace Steve Bruce at Hillsborough, according to Portuguese publication A Bola.
The Owls have been left in limbo by the sudden departure of Bruce to Newcastle United just weeks before the start of a new Championship campaign, with the Steel City side scrambling around for a successor at short notice.
The Mirror (18 July, page 58) claimed that Gary Rowett, a veteran of the Championship, was the initial front-runner despite disappointing spells at Derby County and Stoke City which have damaged his reputation as the bright young thing of English coaching.
Though new claims from the continent suggest that Sheffield Wednesday have identified another potential target, one who is far more left-field.
42-year-old Rui Silva is a long-time ally of Nuno Espirito Santo, having worked with the Wolves boss at Rio Ave, Porto and Valencia before teaming up once again at Molineux. He’s also been a technical coach at Malaga and a scout at Porto.
Rui Silva is a stranger to the managerial hot-seat, however, though after so many years in the background he must be intrigued by the prospect of cutting loose and making a name for himself in his own right.
Either way, this looks like a risk for a Sheffield Wednesday side who will be hoping Rui Silva is more Carlos Carvalhal than Jos Luhukay.
