Report: Sheffield Wednesday have Mick McCarthy on radar

Sheffield Wednesday are languishing in the bottom-half of the Championship table.

According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (04/11; page 59), Sheffield Wednesday could be interested in Mick McCarthy should the Owls end up parting company with Jos Luhukay.

Luhukay is going through a tricky spell at Hillsborough. Wednesday have lost their last four and find themselves languishing in the bottom-half of the Championship.

Their 4-0 home defeat to Norwich City on Saturday saw the Canaries move to the top of the table while the Owls now only find themselves four points clear of the bottom three.

The Sun on Sunday (04/11; page 59) does not suggest how precarious Luhukay’s situation is or how likely a change in the dug-out could be, but does suggest that McCarthy could be interested in the job and Wednesday have the former Ipswich boss on their radar.

The report adds that the 59-year-old has told friends that he is ready to get back into the game having left Portman Road just before the end of last season.

While McCarthy is perhaps not the sort of marquee name that Wednesday fans may be hoping for if Luhukay does leave at any stage, he does boast a very good track record in the second tier.

He has won promotion out of the division on two occasions – admittedly, the most recent came in 2009 – and appeared to work wonders with Ipswich given that the Tractor Boys were hardly big players in the transfer market.

In fact, McCarthy is perhaps only getting the full credit for the work he did with Ipswich several months after his departure, with the club bottom of the division and five points off safety.

But it remains to be seen if Wednesday decide to make a call that could potentially leave the door open for McCarthy to make his return to management.
