Former Wigan Athletic coach Paul Cook is under consideration to replace Garry Monk at Sheffield Wednesday, according to the Mail.

In truth, it certainly wasn’t the worst week of Monk’s mixed managerial career.

Six days ago, Sheffield Wednesday’s 12-point deduction was reduced to six in a massive boost to their survival hopes.

A hard-fought 1-0 victory over promotion-chasing Bournemouth 24 hours later was followed by a 0-0 draw with Millwall that, if it wasn’t for the visitor’s in-form goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski, would have ended up in another well-deserved victory.

But, despite backing Monk to the hilt in a three-hour press conference on Friday, Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri performed a U-turn that would make Boris Johnson blush when handing Monk his P45 last night.

The November international break is usually fertile ground for managerial departures but this was one few saw coming.

Suddenly, with a gruelling fixture list on the horizon, an Owls side just two points adrift of 21st place are looking for new head coach.

The Mail reports that Cook, a man who knows what it takes to survive a relegation dogfight, is already under consideration.

The gravel-voiced Scouser did an incredible job at Wigan last season, guiding the Latics well clear of the drop zone, only for all his good work to be undone by a 12-point deduction after the Latics were plunged into administration.

Cook also led both Portsmouth and Chesterfield to the League Two title, while celebrating promotion with Wigan two years ago.

But waking up Sheffield Wednesday, one of English football’s sleeping giants, may be Cook’s biggest challenge yet.
