Sheffield Wednesday’s offer for Rhodes would exceed their previous club record transfer fee – which saw another Middlesbrough player, Adam Reach, move to Hillsborough in August.

Sheffield Wednesday will offer £8 million plus extras for Middlesbrough’s Jordan Rhodes, as they look to outbid fellow suitors Aston Villa, according to the Sun.

Villa boss Steve Bruce conceded defeat in his pursuit of the out-of-favour striker at a press conference on Friday, and it is claimed his side’s bid was of £6 million plus another £4 million in add-ons.

But Wednesday, it would appear, are hoping that by offering more up front than their Championship rivals, they can finally persuade Boro to cede their reported £12 million valuation.

According to the Sun, Rhodes – whose dad, Andy, is Wednesday’s goalkeeping coach – would be keen on a move to Hillsborough, although Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal has repeatedly stressed the club are wary of breaching the Football League’s financial fair play restrictions.

The Yorkshire side have already signed one new striker this month, with Barnsley’s Sam Winnall arriving for an initial £500,000 fee 10 days ago, and also have Gary Hooper back from a two-month injury lay-off.

However, summer signing Steven Fletcher will miss Wednesday’s next three matches through suspension.

Should the Sun’s report prove accurate, the Owls’ bid for Rhodes would exceed the amount they paid for his former Middlesbrough teammate, Adam Reach, who arrived at Hillsborough in a deal said to be worth between £5 million and £7 million in August.
