According to a report from the Mail on Sunday (4/8; page 111), Sheffield United have joined West Brom in the race to take Everton defender Mason Holgate on loan for the coming campaign.

Holgate went into this summer off the back of an impressive loan spell at the Hawthorns. It appeared to leave the youngster with a fantastic chance of forcing his way into Marco Silva’s plans at Goodison Park ahead of this season.

It remains to be seen what the Toffees’ plans for Holgate are during the final days of the window. But if he is available, there is some attractive opportunities set to be put on the table.

The Mail on Sunday (4/8; page 111) reports that Slaven Bilic is keen to bring Holgate back to the Baggies, but the Blades also want the 22-year-old as Chris Wilder continues to prepare his side for their return to the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see where Holgate would prefer to go if he is made available by Everton. He may feel that he has unfinished business with West Brom after they missed out in last season’s play-offs, and his chances of playing regularly would obviously increase if he returned to the Championship.

However, moving to Bramall Lane – and perhaps playing alongside Phil Jagielka – would present Holgate with a good opportunity to prove himself to his parent club as Wilder’s men look to prove their doubters wrong and secure a second successive season in the Premier League.
