Sheffield United could sign Wes Foderingham after his contract at Rangers expired, according to The Sun (29 June, page 61).
With the 29-year-old goalkeeper becoming a free agent after five years at Ibrox, he is understandably looking for a club where first-team football would be a regular occurrence.
Speaking to Open Goal recently, Foderingham admitted that he was disappointed about the way his time at the Glasgow giants came to an end, making just six Scottish Premiership appearances since the dramatic return to Allan McGregor in 2018.
He did, however, admit that there was ‘some interest from down south’.
And The Sun might have just revealed the identity of that mystery suitor.
Chris Wilder wants some extra competition between the sticks ahead of next season, with Simon Moore unproven in the top flight and the future of Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson uncertain.
And Foderingham, with his experience and impressive technical ability between the sticks, might not get a better offer this summer.
He has never played in the Premier League before and, if The Blades can sharpen up over the next few weeks, European football at Bramall Lane is still a realistic possibility.
But with the Sun pointing out that Foderingham is seen as a ‘back-up’ option in the Steel City, Foderingham might have his doubts about whether a move to Sheffield United is what he really needs after two years stuck on the bench at Rangers.
If Henderson stays for another 12 months in the Steel City, Foderingham will once again be gathering dust on the sidelines.
