Sheffield United wanted to sign Hirving Lozano on loan from Napoli and were willing to pay £9 million for the privilege, according to Tuttosport.
It is four months now since a man who cost the Serie A giants £38 million last summer was thrown out of training by Gennaro Gattuso and missed the Coppa Italia final triumph over Juventus as punishment for a perceived lack of effort behind the scenes.
But if Lozano appeared to hit rock bottom on that fateful June afternoon, he deserves so much credit for picking himself up off the gravel (ESPN).
The Mexico international forced his way back into Gattuso’s plans with a series of eye-catching cameo performances and, thanks in part to the departure of Jose Callejon, now looks like a key player going forward at the Stadio San Paolo.
So much so that Napoli even turned down the chance to make £9 million by letting Lozano spend the 2020/21 season on loan at Sheffield United.
Remarkably enough, that would make PSV’s two-time Eredivisie-winning hero the fifth-most expensive signing in the Blades history – and he wouldn’t even be a full-time member of Chris Wilder’s squad.
Tuttosport adds that PSG were also interested before Napoli opted to keep their faith in a man who is just starting to offer glimpses of the talent which saw him net 40 goals in 79 games in Holland.
