Maupay is one of several players being linked to both Sheffield United and Aston Villa.

Neal Maupay of Brentford celebrate after scoring goal during the Sky Bet Championship match between Brentford and Leeds United at Griffin Park on April 22, 2019 in Brentford, England.

Sheffield United will have to pay ‘well over £15 million’ for the Brentford striker, Neal Maupay, according to the Daily Mirror (July 5, page 60).

That valuation is already said to have caused rival suitors, Aston Villa, to cool their interest.

Maupay scored against both Sheffield United and Aston Villa (three times) in the Championship last season, as part of a 25-goal haul in the league.

And reports claimed he had emerged as a target for both promoted sides.

But it appears that Sheffield United are now leading the pursuit of Maupay’s signature.

The Blades broke their transfer record earlier this week after signing the Queens Park Rangers attacking midfielder, Luke Freeman, for £5m. But they can expect to eclipse that should Maupay arrive.

The Frenchman is not the first player to be linked with both Sheffield United and Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.

One of those, Jota Peleteiro, has already moved to Aston Villa from Birmingham City.

The Villa manager, Dean Smith, worked with both Jota and Maupay at Brentford.
