Sheffield United ‘retain an interest’ in the Newcastle United striker, Dwight Gayle, according to The Daily Mail.
The Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his attack, having already signed six new players in various other positions this summer.
And Gayle is the latest to be linked with a move to Bramall Lane, despite the Newcastle player facing up to four months out with a knee injury.
Sheffield United, along with Gayle’s former club Crystal Palace, are the frontrunners to sign the Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster, according to The Daily Mail.
But if the Blades fail to lure Brewster, whom it is claimed will be allowed to leave Liverpool on a permanent basis, then alternatives will need to be sought.
Whether or not Sheffield United would move for Gayle in that case remains to be seen, given his unavailability.
But the 29-year-old, for whom Newcastle are reported to have paid Palace £10.8 million in 2016, could be worth pursuing if the signs of an early recovery are there.
Newcastle just spent around double that amount on a new number nine, Callum Wilson, and can also call upon Andy Carroll and Joelinton, as well as Gayle, who has scored 33 goals in 93 games for them.
