Mechelen goalkeeper Michael Verrips could still be on his way to Bramall Lane with Premier League outfit Sheffield United keen.

Sheffield United are in talks to sign Mechelen goalkeeper Michael Verrips with just hours remaining in the transfer window, according to Sky Sports (live, 11.34am).
Back in July, The Mail claimed that The Blades had identified Verrips as their top target if they were unable to bring Dean Henderson back to Bramall Lane on another loan deal from Manchester United.
But even though they did get Henderson over the line, it seems that Sheffield United are still looking to sign the Belgium-based Dutchman – as competition for the England U21 international, rather than a replacement.
It has certainly been a strange summer for Verrips, who shone as Mechelen beat Gent in the Belgian Cup final in May.

According to Sporza, the 22-year-old former Twente and Sparta Rotterdam stopper has refused to attend training sessions at Mechelen as he looks to force through a move to the Premier League. Apparently, he even wants to be released from his contract as a rather unseemly situation rumbles on.
Now, Chris Wilder is a manager who demands absolute commitment from each and every one of his players but it doesn’t seem that he has been put off by Verrips’s rather desperate attempts to secure a move.
