Sheffield United are eyeing a move for Southampton utility player Jason McCarthy, according to the Irish Sun.

However, it is claimed that the Blades are not alone in their interest, with League One rivals Fleetwood Town and Bradford City also keen.

United clinched their promotion back to the Championship on Saturday, which could move them to the front of the queue of clubs chasing the impressive Walsall loanee.

McCarthy, who has played right-back, right midfield and centre-back for the Saddlers this season, is said to be out of contract in June 2018, although the Express & Star reported last week that his deal actually expires this summer.

According to the Irish Sun, Southampton are set to decide on whether to promote the 21-year-old to Claude Puel’s first team or loan him out for another season.

However, he could yet move clubs without the Saints’ blessing, should his contract come to an end a year earlier.

United loanees Joe Riley (a full-back or midfielder), Harry Chapman (a winger) and Ethan Ebanks-Landell (a centre-back) are each due back at their parent clubs this summer, which would explain the Blades’ interest in McCarthy, who has scored five goals in 41 League One outings this season, including one against Chris Wilder’s side.

Would the Southampton starlet be a good recruit for Sheffield United?
