Sheffield United may have no choice but to cash in on John Lundstram this summer with four Premier League clubs ken on the contract rebel midfielder, according to The Mirror (12 August, page 60).
Try as they might, Chris Wilder’s Blades have failed to tie down one of their key players to a new contract.
And with Lundstram due to become a free agent in less than 12 months’ time, the Steel City giants have a dilemma on their hands.
Do they sell now, before it’s too late? Or run the risk of waiting in the hope that fresh terms can, finally, be agreed?
Well, according to the Mirror, Sheffield United have already come to a decision. And it seems that Lundstram has played his final game in those red and white stripes, with Wilder ready to sell.
This comes a day after Sky claimed that a grand total of four Premier League clubs have shown an interest in the former Everton youngster – though the identity of those suitors remains a mystery.
If you’ll allow us to speculate for a second, Newcastle United have been scouring the market for cut-price midfielders.
After showing an interest in free-agents Jeff Hendrick and Arnaud Lusamba, Lundstram certainly ticks plenty of boxes for Steve Bruce’s side.

Not least because, with five top-flight goals in 2019/20, the late-blooming 26-year-old could add some much-needed end product to a goal-shy Magpies side.
The Examiner reported earlier this month that Sheffield United have identified Reading’s assist-machine John Swift as a readymade replacement for Lundstram.
