David Brooks could be set for a return to Sheffield United after Bournemouth were relegated from the Premier League although the Blades would have to shatter their transfer record, according to The Sun (13 August, page 51).

Chris Wilder knows an exciting talent when he sees one.

And it didn’t take long for the Blades boss to realise that, in this little Welsh wizard, he had something a little special on his hands.

“Brooks’ attitude has been superb,” Wilder told the Worksop Guardian in 2017 after the teenager lead Sheffield Wednesday defender Jack Hunt a merry dance during the Steel City derby.

“Look at the derby game, a player’s temperament is a big thing when you play in the Championship. He wasn’t phased.

“He came on against Cardiff and changed the game. to do what he did there, in that environment, spoke volumes about his character.”

Three years on, a reunion could be on the cards at Bramall Lane – though whether Sheffield United are willing to, or capable of, breaking their transfer record for the second time this year remains to be seen.

The Sun reports that Brooks, who is also a target for Liverpool and Tottenham, is valued at £35 million.

That is £23 more than Sheffield United sold him for back in the summer of 2018.

The Wales international missed most of last season through injury but, during the 2018/19 campaign, he produced seven goals and five assists in his debut Premier League season.

Could he add an element of creativity at the heart of a Blades midfield which is more solid than spectacular?
