Holmes, who played under United manager Chris Wilder at Northampton, is said to have been the subject of Blades interest earlier in the summer.
It is claimed the 30-year-old was keen on the idea of a move to Bramall Lane, but later committed himself to Charlton after the two clubs failed to agree a fee.

However, The Sheffield Star reports that Holmes was watched by a member of United’s coaching staff at the end of last month, as the Addicks beat Rotherham United 2-0 at the New York Stadium.
The former non-league player provided the assist for Josh Magennis’ winner that afternoon.
And the Blades’ presence is said to have prompted speculation they could make a fresh approach when the transfer window reopens – ‘if Charlton suffer a dip in form over the Christmas period’.
Devante Cole in action for Fleetwood Town
According to The Sheffield Star, United will decide whether or not to resurrect their interest in Devante Cole after reviewing why the striker’s proposed move from Fleetwood Town fell through on deadline day.
Though deployed as a winger on either flank this season, Holmes can also operate as a central attacker if required.
