Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder worked with Smith at Northampton Town, but interest from Derby County and Nottingham Forest could scupper his chances of a reunion.
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder
Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder is battling Derby County and Nottingham Forest to sign his former goalkeeper Adam Smith, the Sun reports.
Wilder worked with Smith at previous club Northampton, who the 24-year-old is looking to leave at the end of his contract this summer.
Smith shone en route to the League Two title last season and carried his fine form into the third tier, helping the Cobblers steer clear of relegation.
The former Leicester City trainee is almost certainly ready to test himself at a higher level, and there could be vacancies at Sheffield United, Derby and Forest this summer.
United and Derby lost Aaron Ramsdale and Lee Grant respectively in January, while Forest failed to adequately replace Dorus De Vries, who was sold to Celtic in 2016.
Smith would perhaps face a battle to become first choice at either Bramall Lane or Pride Park, however, with the performances of Simon Moore (United) and Scott Carson (Derby) earning plaudits this season, making a move to the City Ground arguably his best bet.
Having said that, the Reds’ chances could be dented by their relegation to League One, which remains on the cards with a game still to play.
