It had been suggested that Jack Colback’s Newcastle United contract was set to expire at the end of the season.
Nottingham Forest loanee Jack Colback will not be available on a free transfer at the end of the season as the Chronicle reports that his contract at Newcastle still has one year to run.
Colback’s future has been up in the air for a little while, with the combative midfielder currently enjoying his second loan spell at the City Ground after being allowed to leave by Magpies boss Rafa Benitez.
The Chronicle reports that it had been thought Colback was out of contract at St James’ Park this summer – and that seemed to pave the way for Forest to potentially pick the 29-year-old up for nothing.
However, the report adds that Colback actually has another year on his deal with Newcastle.
The Chronicle suggests that Colback heading to Forest for a fee is a realistic option, while there is an outside chance that he could look to earn himself another opportunity at Newcastle if Benitez departs.
Based on the former Sunderland man’s form this season, it would have been a real coup for Forest had they been able to complete a free transfer in the summer. He has been a key player over the last 13 months and it would have been a fantastic piece of business to keep him without spending a penny on a transfer fee.
But with Benitez seemingly showing little sign of changing his mind on Colback, it appears that the door remains open for Forest to get something done as long as the Spaniard stays.
