According to a report in the Chronicle, Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez’s meeting with Mike Ashley was very positive today.

Benitez’s future at St. James’ Park is still not entirely secure, despite his side’s promotion back to the Premier League.

The Spaniard has been cautious to offer any assurances that he will be in charge again next season.

Benitez is thought to be demanding greater control of Newcastle’s transfers, and a sizeable budget to spend.

And the Chronicle suggest that Benitez’s request is edging closer to being granted by Ashley, after a meeting today.

The pair discussed a range of topics, with Benitez presenting his future plans for Newcastle to the owner.

Lee Charnley was also thought to have been involved in the meeting, with Newcastle already making plans for next season.

Charnley’s position at Newcastle had appeared to be under threat at one stage, but it is now thought that he is safe in his current role as managing director.

Benitez and Ashley still have plenty to discuss, and have now arranged a second date to sit down to talk further on the points raised today.
