Wolverhampton Wanderers have enjoyed an outstanding first season back in the Premier League.
According to a report from Birmingham Live, Wolves’ priorities this summer will be to strengthen their options in defence and in central midfield after Nuno Espirito Santo celebrated their first season back in the Premier League with a seventh-place finish.
Anyone who watched the Championship last season will not be at all surprised that Wolves proved to have the most success of any of the promoted sides, with both Cardiff City and Fulham returning to the second tier at the first time of asking.
Plenty were tipping Nuno’s men for an outstanding campaign, but they still deserve enormous credit for finishing well inside the top-half. And they will be heading for Europa League football next season if Manchester City beat Watford in the FA Cup final.
The competition has been a curse to some in recent years as it places greater demands on the squads involved. But it is surely an exciting step for Wolves given the calibre of player that they were already attracting when they were in the Championship.
Birmingham Live reports that their priority this summer is to add to their defensive options as well as their ranks in the middle of the park – though Nuno wants to continue working with a smaller squad.
It may be a gamble to keep the squad on the smaller side as they potentially face battling on four fronts next season. But given the success that Nuno has enjoyed since arriving at Molineux, there is little reason to believe that their transfer strategy will be anything other than extremely successful.
