Maddison and Toney have scored 19 League One goals between them this season – imagine what they could’ve done at Championship strugglers Boro.

Middlesbrough were put off signing Peterborough United duo Ivan Toney and Marcus Maddison over the summer, according to the Gazette, having been ‘spooked’ by their hefty price tags.

And this is the last thing Boro fans want to read after two successive 0-0 draws, which leave Jonathan Woodgate’s side stuck in the Championship relegation zone with just 11 goals in 14 league games this season.

After all, Toney and Maddison have scored more goals between them and Middlesbrough as a whole so far in 2019/20.

Former Newcastle United youngster Toney is the top scorer in the Football League right now, having plundered 11 goals already for high-flying Peterborough. The enigmatic Maddison is the star of the show at London Road, however, with the playmaker reinforcing his reputation as League One’s most influential player with an outstanding run of form for Darren Ferguson’s side.

Maddison, who also had a spell at Newcastle in his youth, has contributed eight goals and six assists in 14 games with his wand of a left foot weaving magic on a weekly basis.

The Gazette does not make clear how much Peterborough wanted for their star duo, though TEAMtalk claimed recently that Toney is valued at £10 million with Middlesbrough still understood to be interested heading into the January transfer window.

But will desperation encourage owner Steve Gibson to dive deep into his pockets?
