Report shares why Ally McCoist’s hopes of landing Sunderland job were dashed

Ally McCoist was linked with the Sunderland job as the Championship strugglers searched for Simon Grayson’s successor.

According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (print edition; 19th November 2017; page 65), Ally McCoist’s chances of landing the Sunderland job were dashed because Walter Smith would not head to the Stadium of Light with him.

The Black Cats have been without a permanent manager since the very end of last month when they parted company with Simon Grayson less than 20 minutes after the final whistle following their draw with Bolton Wanderers.

BBC Sport reports that Chris Coleman is set to get the job, but perhaps the Welshman may not have been waiting in the wings to succeed Grayson had circumstances been different.

The Sun on Sunday (print edition; 19th November 2017; page 65) reports that McCoist was in contention for the job with the Black Cats, having worked with chief executive Martin Bain during their time together at Rangers.

However, The Sun on Sunday adds that the Scotsman’s chances of landing the job were harmed by Smith being reluctant to follow him to the Championship side.

It is not clear whether that put McCoist off or put Bain off considering the 55-year-old more seriously, but with McCoist’s managerial record unspectacular and Coleman’s stock incredibly high given the job that he has done with Wales, the Black Cats supporters will surely not be disappointed with the outcome.
