Tottenham Hotspur were ready to make an offer for Monaco winger Thomas Lemar earlier this summer.

According to a report in the Independent, Tottenham Hotspur were interested in Monaco’s Thomas Lemar at the start of the summer – but pulled out of a deal after being informed he wanted to become their highest paid player.

Tottenham have a strict wage policy in place, which has meant that Mauricio Pochettino’s side do not pay their top players as much as many of their Premier League rivals’.

And Spurs are refusing to budge on that stance, even though they were keen to bring Lemar to North London.

Tottenham reportedly learnt that Lemar was set to ask to become the highest paid player in the squad, if he was to move to North London.

And that put Mauricio Pochettino’s side off taking their interest any further.

Spurs could now risk seeing Lemar sign for their capital rivals, Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger still interested in signing up the French international.

Any deal is complicated at this stage, with Monaco demanding a big fee for the highly-rated winger.

Tottenham are yet to complete a signing so far this summer, with Pochettino’s side operating with caution in the transfer market to date.
