Lascelles is enjoying a first full season in the Premier League, and is reportedly attracting interest from Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton ahead of the summer transfer window [Chronicle].
However, it is claimed that Benitez – who suggested last month Lascelles is at the same level as Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, a player said to be valued at £50 million [Sun] – will insist Newcastle do not cash in on the 24-year-old.
Lascelles – who moved to St James’ Park from Nottingham Forest three-and-half-years ago – signed a new six-year contract as recently as four months ago.
Can Newcastle resist multi-million-pound Lascelles bids?
Barring any positive developments regarding the takeover at Newcastle, cashing in on Lascelles could be the best way for Benitez – or whoever is in charge at that point – to fund his summer recruitment drive.
And even with a significant injection of cash, the chances are the player would want to speak to other clubs – especially those involved in next season’s Champions League.
