Sunderland had made Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes their first choice managerial target.
According to the Daily Mail, Derek McInnes rejected the Sunderland job for a number of reasons.
McInnes was identified as Sunderland’s first choice target to take over from David Moyes, but he has turned down their offer at the last minute.
Aberdeen were desperate for the 45-year-old to stay at Pittodrie, and promised him a sizeable transfer budget if he stuck around.
And Aberdeen’s promise of funding was enough to convince McInnes that staying in Scotland was a better option.
The 45-year-old also had considerable doubts over moving to Sunderland, as he felt that the Wearsiders were in an uncertain situation.
With Ellis Short looking to sell the club, and Sunderland having a limited amount of money to spend – McInnes decided that it was too much of a risk to move to the Championship promotion hopefuls.
McInnes’ rejection is a major blow for Sunderland, who will now have to search for a new manager to take them forward next season.
At the moment, Preston North End boss Simon Grayson is the favourite to take over at Sunderland.
