Southampton have made two additions to their first-team this summer, with Moussa Djenepo and Che Adams arriving at St Mary’s.

According to a report from the Daily Echo, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s next target is to sign a new centre-back after Southampton completed their second signing of the summer by getting Che Adams through the St Mary’s door.

The Saints have made a couple of notable moves in the window so far. Moussa Djenepo joined from Standard Liege and Adams arrived from Birmingham after an outstanding year in front of goal in the Championship.

The two deals will please the supporters who were keen to see the club add more fire-power to their ranks after a campaign in which their top goalscorers in the Premier League finished with only seven strikes each.

But it is also at the back where the fans are likely to want to see improvement. Hasenhuttl has a number of options in defence, but there is no player that currently provides the same reliability as former stalwarts such as Jose Fonte, Toby Alderweireld and Virgil van Dijk.

However, the Daily Echo is reporting that signing a new centre-back is the club’s next priority this summer.

It is, of course, much easier said than done to find a player who is anywhere near as good or as influential as the previously-mentioned trio. But Southampton appear to have reverted to something like the transfer policy that led to a lot of exciting players arriving during their first few years back in the top flight.

So there is perhaps every reason to believe that the defender who does join the club this summer will prove to be a player to keep a very close eye on in the coming years.
