Newcastle United announced Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce as their new head coach on Wednesday.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Sheffield Wednesday asked for players in exchange during talks with Newcastle over Steve Bruce, but the Magpies rejected that bid from the Owls.

The Premier League side have now announced that they have appointed Bruce as Rafa Benitez’s successor, with Sky Sports reporting that Wednesday will be paid £4 million in compensation.

The move has felt as though it has been on the cards for some time. But it appears that Dejphon Chansiri attempted to gain more from the talks, with Sky Sports adding that the Owls for players to come to Hillsborough as part of the deal that saw Bruce head in the opposite direction.

However, Newcastle reportedly rejected that request. Of course, it was the Owls who loaned both Achraf Lazaar and Rolando Aarons for the second-half of last season, with the latter, in particular, doing fairly well during his time in Yorkshire.

It makes sense that the Magpies did reject that request from Wednesday. Bruce now needs to assess what is available to him at St James’ Park before potentially offloading players in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Bruce appeared to make a promising start to life with the Owls. But it would be no surprise if the Wednesday fans were somewhat relieved that the uncertainty appears to be over and they can get on with restarting their preparations for the new Championship season.
