Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to sign defender Juan Foyth.
According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are poised to sign Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth – but he’s expected to go into the club’s Under-23 side.
Spurs have been quiet in the transfer market so far, as Mauricio Pochettino has yet to bring in any new signings, but did see right back Kyle Walker leave for Manchester City in a big-money deal.
That could now spark Tottenham into life in terms of incomings this summer, with one deal believed to be on the verge of completion this week.
Sky Sports report that Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth is set to join Spurs in a deal worth around £8million, pending a work permit after Estudiantes president Juan Sebastian Veron arrived in London to seal the move.
Foyth, 19, has come up through the ranks with Estudiantes having been born in La Plata, and he has not only impressed for his club, but also on the international stage having featured for Argentina at the Under-20 World Cup in South Korea earlier this summer.
Intriguingly, the report suggests that Foyth won’t be brought into the first team setup immediately, and will instead go straight into the Tottenham Under-23 side for the upcoming season.
That means that Pochettino will now have two young defenders to mould in Foyth and Cameron Carter-Vickers, but it also leaves Spurs open to signing another central defender later in the transfer window.
With Kevin Wimmer potentially heading for the exit in search of first-team football, Pochettino may still be able to line up a possible replacement in defence without being forced into throwing Foyth into Premier League action, which is particularly important given how many players over the years have struggled with the transition from South America straight into the Premier League.
This now gives Foyth the chance to settle down and adjust slowly, whilst Spurs could still sign another central defender to boost their immediate ambitions – if Wimmer does end up leaving this summer.
