According to a report in the Telegraph, Newcastle United’s players are being given time off training – as Rafael Benitez attempts to break his side out of their slumber.

Newcastle are stumbling over the line, as they aim to be promoted from the Championship this season.

The Magpies have looked set to finish in the top two all season, but the pressure is on them to win two of their final three fixtures to mathematically secure promotion.

Newcastle lost 3-1 to Ipswich Town in their most recent fixture, with their performance being extremely poor.

But Benitez has decided that the best course of action is to reduce the strain on his players.

While many managers may have worked their players harder in training, Benitez has completely changed tactic.

Newcastle’s players have been given two days off training, and will not return until Thursday.

Indeed, the Telegraph claim that Newcastle’s training ground has virtually been empty throughout this week – with Benitez even handing some staff time off.

Newcastle are next in action against Preston North End on Monday evening, before they face Cardiff City and Barnsley.
