Newcastle United are said to be considering appointing Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce.

According to a report in the Telegraph, Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley sees Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce as a safe pair of hands, but knows he isn’t high profile enough to be first choice to take over from Rafael Benitez.

Newcastle are currently on the hunt for a new manager, and Bruce’s name has emerged as a potential candidate.

The experienced boss only took charge at Wednesday midway through last season, but it is thought that he is on Newcastle’s list of potential candidates for next season.

Ashley is said to feel that Bruce would be a solid appointment at St. James’ Park, but the Newcastle owner knows that the Wednesday man cannot be first choice.

Newcastle are determined to not be pressurised into making an appointment, as they want to make sure they get Benitez’s replacement correct.

And Bruce is only likely to arrive at St. James’ Park if Newcastle are struggling to attract other targets.

That news is likely to go down well at both Newcastle and Wednesday.

Bruce has made a very bright start with the Owls, and he is a very popular figure at Hillsborough.

Bruce is likely not to be a popular choice to take over from Benitez though, as it would be hard not to think that Newcastle would be making a major downgrade.
