According to The Athletic, Liverpool see Joe Gomez as cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold next season if they choose to sell Neco Williams.
Alexander-Arnold is Liverpool’s clear first-choice right back, making it hard for a youngster like Williams to break through.
It’s now stated that Liverpool are expecting Williams to push for a move away from Anfield, with a £10million deal potentially in the works.
Gomez to fill in as Liverpool’s second right back?
It’s stated that Liverpool won’t sign a replacement for Williams if he does leave, and will instead look to deal with his exit in-house.
Youngster Conor Bradley is impressing Jurgen Klopp, but it’s noted that Gomez is seen as the main cover when he returns from injury.
Primarily a centre back, Gomez has played in both full back roles during his time at Liverpool, and could now be viewed as an option there once again.

Liverpool are taking a risk
Liverpool have a host of centre back options for next season; Gomez would be vying with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Nat Phillips, Rhys Williams and Ben Davies, as well as new signing Ibrahima Konate.
Using Gomez’s versatility is a smart idea in one sense, but is also a major risk in another.
Liverpool have just endured a number of defensive injuries in a ridiculous season, leaving themselves exposed at centre back.
An injury to Gomez – which has been a problem in recent years – would leave Alexander-Arnold as Liverpool’s only natural senior right back, and force Klopp to use players out of position once again.
Additionally, if something was to happen to Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool would lose so much going forward by using Gomez in that right back spot.
Gomez may be better defensively, but Liverpool surely need to find a more natural right back if Williams leaves; that’s what Manchester City would do, and that’s who Liverpool need to chase.
Risking it again at the back after last season would be bold from Liverpool, and wouldn’t leave fans feeling particularly confident as a centre back would have to come in for Klopp’s most creative player.
