The Evening Standard has reported that Liverpool haven’t given up hope of signing Timo Werner, but that a move could happen toward the end of the next transfer window.
The Reds have long been linked with a move for the Leipzig marksman but speculation has intensified in a big way over the past few months.
Sky Sports reported in April that Liverpool were ready to press ahead with signing the £52 million-rated striker, but that appears to have been wide of the mark because two months later, he’s no closer to a move to Anfield.
Due to the global health crisis, many clubs around Europe are struggling financially and until the smoke clears, it’s difficult to put a number on what a lack of match-day revenue is costing clubs, while it’s also been reported that the entire 2020-21 campaign could be played behind closed doors.
And that, according to The Standard, is why Liverpool haven’t pressed ahead with a big-money swoop for Werner, due to the economic uncertainty that clouds football right now.
The report did add, however, that Jurgen Klopp could wait until later in the transfer window – when it opens – to make his move.
Werner has netted 31 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions for the German club this season.
