According to a report in the Telegraph, David Moyes was given no guarantees that Sunderland would be able to reinvest the money made from player sales.

Sunderland are expected to offload many of their first-team squad this summer, as they cut costs following relegation.

Lamine Kone and Fabio Borini will surely move on, and Sunderland should receive healthy fees for the pair.

Moyes wanted this money to be invested in his first-team squad.

However, according to the Telegraph, Sunderland would offer him no assurances over his transfer budget.

And, in the end, Sunderland’s reluctance to invest was one of the reasons behind his resignation.

Moyes stepped down as Sunderland boss last month, much to the delight of many supporters at the Stadium of Light.

Whether Sunderland will be prepared to back their new manager with more transfer funds remains to be seen, but the signs are that he could be working with a limited budget.

Sunderland are still looking for Moyes’ replacement, with Derek McInnes the current favourite.
