Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Newcastle United’s board will give Eddie Howe until the summer of 2024 to achieve everything he can – and if he fails to deliver, they could bring in a world-class manager like Jurgen Klopp.

Howe signed a new long-term deal at Newcastle in the summer but it is unclear how long that is until. He has made a wonderful start to life in his year in charge. Taking over from Steve Bruce, Newcastle had not won a game at this stage.

But he took Newcastle to a lofty 11th place. This season, he has gone up a level – or two. Having played 15 games before the World Cup break, Newcastle sit in third place with a huge 30 points. Above the likes of Liverpool and Spurs.

However, given the cash reserves of the Newcastle board and the growth of the club – there are still question marks over how long Howe can keep the job. Jones delivers some insight – saying he will be given perhaps, 18 months.

That takes Howe until the end of next season. If The Toon board believe they are capable of more by that point, then they could look to replace him and will want a “world-class” manager. Klopp is suggested, with his deal ending in 2024.

“From what I hear, Newcastle are going to give Howe his chance to take this team as far as he can. Every message I’m getting is that is going to be the case. I would say we’ve got here at least 18 months of Eddie Howe at the helm.

“If he can’t, if that’s the point in which they change, then they’re going to go for a world-class manager. And that’s when you consider, is it going to be somebody like Jurgen Klopp,” Jones said, in quotes published by Give Me Sport.

Howe deserves the chance to take Newcastle forward. Perhaps an underwhelming appointment, given Unai Emery was the club’s first choice, Howe has been exceptional in the hotseat. He has reunited a club with the enormous fanbase.

The feel-good factor in the north east is as high as it has ever been. Newcastle are only looking up and if Howe can take the Toon into Europe this season, it will be a phenomenal achievement. But there is always that question mark.

Can he be the man to really take Newcastle towards titles, towards Champions League qualification – towards Europe’s elite? Well, he is doing so at the moment and as long as he keeps up the upwards trajectory, he should get the chance.
