The Whites had been seen as favourites for the Dutchman’s signature but now look to face stiff competition.

Leeds United’s chances of signing Dutch centre-back Tom Beugelsdijk could have taken a hit, with Netherlands outlet Omroep West claiming that Serie A duo Sampdoria and Pescara have joined the race.

Garry Monk is thought to be in the market for another defensive addition before Wednesday’s transfer deadline, despite already having brought in Pontus Janssen and Swansea City loanee Kyle Bartley to strengthen his ranks.

Beugelsdijk, who has impressed for ADO Den Haag in recent times, is thought to be one of Monk’s prime targets, with a report earlier this week suggesting that Leeds had sent scouts to watch the defender.

The 26-year-old spoke on the speculation a few days ago, saying that whilst it was nice to attract the interest of the Whites, he would not bother himself with the talk unless a serious offer was made.

Now, it appears as though Leeds could have serious competition for the centre-back’s signature, as Omroep West claim that Serie A pair Sampdoria and Pescara are also interested.

Pescara are known to be keen on bringing in another centre-back after missing out to AEK Athens in the race to sign Aston Villa man Joleon Lescott.

Leeds will be considered about the report, as the Italian clubs have a serious advantage over the Yorkshire side as they can offer high-quality European top-flight football.

With Den Haag’s manager Željko Petrović insisting that Beugelsdijk will not be sold, it will be interesting to see if a deal does materialise in the next few days, and if so, where his destination will prove to be.
