According to Sky Sports, Porto boss Sergio Conceicao is interested in becoming the next Newcastle United manager.

The Magpies confirmed on Monday that Rafael Benitez is leaving the club when his contract comes to an end on Sunday, with the two parties unable to come to an agreement on an extension.

The Newcastle faithful are furious with Mike Ashley and co for letting Benitez go, and a big appointment will be needed to appease the fanbase.

Some less-than-inspiring names have been mentioned, but it’s now believed that Conceicao is surprisingly interested in a move to St James’ Park.

Conceicao has endured a nomadic career to date, taking charge of Olhanense, Academica, Braga, Vitoria Guimaraes, Nantes and now Porto, where he won the league title last year.

The 44-year-old has guided Porto into the latter stages of the Champions League qualifiers, but he may now be willing to give that up for a shot at Premier League management.

Conceicao has impressed in charge of Porto, and may be one of the more exciting names in the mix so far, having won a league title and pushed for a progressive style at the Estadio do Dragao.

After some difficult years, Porto have kicked on again under Conceicao, and if given a few years at Newcastle, he may well be able to continue Benitez’s fine work.
