West Ham United sold Grady Dianganga as they simply had no funds to invest in players that David Moyes wanted, the Telegraph suggest.
Diangana was controversially offloaded by West Ham this week, with West Bromwich Albion signing the youngster.
The move caused anger among supporters and players alike.
But a senior source at West Ham said that Diangana had to be sold, as he was the only player they could raise money for.
“We have no funds so we had to sacrifice a player and we had no offers for anyone else,” they said.

West Ham are now likely to buy players with the money they have raised from Diangana’s sale, but whether the anger will subside remains to be seen.
Diangana was considered one of West Ham’s brightest prospects and his departure can only be considered a major blow.
Moyes appears to want to invest in signing new defenders, but if West Ham start the season poorly then the anger being directed at their current board will only grow.
