Mesut Ozil might not be finished at Arsenal after all.
Mikel Arteta left the enigmatic playmaker out of his 20-man squad for their 3-0 defeat by Manchester City in midweek.
Such a move has yet again plunged Ozil’s Arsenal future in doubt.
The former Germany international was a regular fixture under Arteta prior to the season being suspended, starting all 10 Premier League games under the Spaniard.
But the Gunners boss intimated afterwards the 31-year-old isn’t pulling his weight in training.
ESPN have now reported that Ozil is ‘determined’ to fight for his place in North London, but ‘senior figures’ at the club want to sell the former Real Madrid star.
This is a player who earns £350,000 per week and getting him off the wagebill would substantially help Arsenal’s financial situation, as ESPN add that some members of the club’s hierarchy view him as a ‘burden’ at such a difficult time.
Arsenal are potentially facing losses of £144 million if next season is played behind closed doors.
This isn’t the first time that Ozil has looked finished at the Emirates Stadium and, honestly, it probably won’t be the last.
