Rangers are reportedly set to bring a new centre back to Ibrox this weekend.
Former Aston Villa defender Philippe Senderos
According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers are set to snap up defender Philippe Senderos on a two-year contract, with the player flying in to Glasgow.
The Gers did land free agent defender Clint Hill earlier this summer, but manager Mark Warburton has been pushing to bring in another veteran centre back to boost his back line before this month’s transfer deadline.
Aston Villa’s Joleon Lescott, whose move to Rangers collapsed on Friday, in action with Papiss Demba Cisse
The Scottish Sun report that Aston Villa centre back Joleon Lescott was all set to pen a deal with Rangers having been told he was surplus to requirements at Villa Park, but the move fell apart at the last minute on Friday.
Various reasons have been cited, from personal reasons to failing to agree terms to failing a medical, but Rangers must now look to bring in an alternative – and manager Warburton appears to have a ready-made signing on the way.
Philippe Senderos in action with Christian Benteke
As reported by The Scottish Sun, defender Philippe Senderos is flying in to Glasgow in the next 48 hours in order to put pen-to-paper on a two-year contract with Rangers, having spent most of the week on trial with Warburton’s men.
The 31-year-old defender, currently a free agent having left Grasshopper Zurich earlier this summer, was brought in for training with the Rangers squad earlier this week, and whilst he recently flew back to Geneva, Warburton is bringing him straight back to Ibrox.
Philippe Senderos in action for Switzerland
Best known for having made over 100 appearances for Arsenal, Senderos has also featured for the likes of AC Milan, Everton, Fulham, Valencia and Aston Villa, picking up great experience during his career.
Senderos has played in three World Cups for Switzerland, and fits the bill as a player to add a veteran presence alongside either Rob Kiernan or Danny Wilson in the Rangers back four – and with a two-year contract set to be signed this weekend, Warburton is set to bounce back quickly from the blow of missing out on Lescott.
