Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad report Newcastle United are close to finalising a deal to sign goalkeeper Matz Sels.
The paper claim Sels has already undergone and passed his Newcastle medical, and put pen to paper on a five year deal.
Details between Newcastle and Sels’ current side Gent are still to be finalised, but an agreement in the region of six million Euros (around £4 million) has been reached.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez
The paper describe Sels’ decision to join Newcastle as ‘remarkable’ due to their relegation from the Premier League, but from another perspective it simply shows the pull that the club and manager Rafa Benitez have.
Newcastle United’s Tim Krul
Sels’ arrival could lead to goalkeeper Tim Krul’s inevitable departure, and asks questions over whether one of Rob Elliot or Karl Darlow could too find themselves squeezed out of the picture.
Sels will become Newcastle’s first summer signing, while HITC Sport understand the club are closing in on a deal to sign Dwight Gayle from Crystal Palace, having agreed personal terms with the striker.
