Former Olympic gold medalist Sebastian Coe offered to speak to Jose Mourinho about managing Sheffield Wednesday if the club managed to find wealthy new owners, reports the Independent.
The revelation, as well as others involving the Owls, features in a book by Jon Smith, entitled: ‘The Deal, Inside the World of a Super-Agent’.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred after Wednesday were approached by prospective Ukrainian buyers two years ago.
Coe – who is a friend of Smith’s, the man who allegedly brokered a meeting between the Owls and their then suitors – is said to have been behind the idea to relocate the Yorkshire side from their Hillsborough home to the now demolished Don Valley Stadium, which it was thought would increase the club’s appeal.

The 60-year-old grew up in Sheffield and is claimed by the Independent to have an affinity with the Owls, despite being described as a lifelong Chelsea supporter on the Blues’ official website.
“Seb had even offered to speak to Jose Mourinho to see if he might be interested,” Smith writes, according to the Independent. “At the time, that was not as fanciful as it may sound because Jose was without a club and open to suggestion.”
Ultimately, no deal was reached with the Ukrainians, of whom Smith adds: “They obviously wanted to get some of their cash – wherever it had come from – out of Ukraine and thought a football club in the UK would be a good, safe home for it.”
Wednesday were later sold to Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri, while Mourinho – who was Chelsea’s manager two years ago, which contradicts the timing of Coe’s alleged offer – took the reins at Manchester United this summer.
