Kasper Schmeichel has entered contract talks with Leicester City, according to ESPN.

The Danish goalkeeper, the son of legendary Manchester United stopper Peter Schmeichel, has been an integral part of the Foxes’ title winning campaign, and he narrowly missed out on the Golden Glove to Petr Cech despite having racked up 15 clean sheets.

Schmeichel has been linked with moves away from the club, including to Catalan giants Barcelona, as reported in the Sun.

But now Leicester have made the first move as they seek to keep hold of the 29 year old, with the club’s Thai owners looking to make good on promise that none of their key players will leave the King Power this summer.

Such speculation over the Dane’s future has been fuelled by confirmation from Hannover that German stopper Ron-Robert Zieler is in talks with Leicester.

Zieler, 27, came through the youth academy at Manchester United, and since leaving Old Trafford he has established himself as a top goalkeeper in his homeland, becoming Hannover 96’s first choice goalkeeper five years ago and has not looked back since.

And with a new deal now in the offing for Schmeichel, it means the Premier League champions are committed to the idea of having two first choice goalkeepers next season.

Such a move has questioned by many quarters as an attempt to undermine the position Schmiechel, who has now etched his name into the folklore of the club.

However, with Champions League football to look forward to next season, the Foxes won’t want to run the risk of losing their number one goalkeeper to injury in their attempts to retain their Premier League crown.
