Jorg Schmadtke is backing a Liverpool move for Wolfsburg central defender Micky van de Ven this summer.

Liverpool could now ramp up their interest in signing Wolfsburg star Micky van de Ven after Jorg Schmadtke’s arrival.

That is according to Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, who report that Liverpool are keen on luring Van de Ven to Anfield.

It’s stated that Liverpool’s new sporting director Schmadtke has given a ‘good assessment’ of Van de Ven, as relayed by Liga Insider.

Schmadtke was the man who signed Van de Ven for Wolfsburg back in 2021, plucking him from Dutch side Volendam.

Schmadtke paid around €3.5million (£3million) to sign Van de Ven, but he will cost much, much more now.

WAZ suggest that Wolfsburg could demand around €40million (£34million) for Van de Ven if Liverpool make their move.

Whether Liverpool would fancy paying that is up for debate, but it’s clear that Schmadtke is a big fan.

Who is Liverpool target Micky van de Ven?

Van de Ven came up through the Volendam ranks and emerged into their first team in 2019.

After 45 appearances in the Dutch second division – yes, Van de Ven never even made it to the Eredivisie – Wolfsburg pounced.

Van de Ven has now turned out 41 times for Wolfsburg, playing predominantly as a centre back.

Van de Ven does have experience as a left back as well though and is naturally left-footed.

The modern game has seen a real rise for left-footed defenders and Liverpool have been linked with a few now.

Levi Colwill, Max Kilman and Nayef Aguerd have all been mentioned in recent months but Van de Ven makes sense too.

Tall, fast and comfortable on the ball, Liverpool may well believe that Van de Ven can become a superstar in the future – but whether they think he is worth £34million remains to be seen.
