Aston Villa are expected to beat Middlesbrough to the signature of Sam Johnstone from Manchester United.

According to a report in the Daily Star, Sam Johnstone has snubbed a deal from Middlesbrough to join Aston Villa.

Boro had wanted to sign Johnstone from Manchester United, but have been beaten to the punch for Villa.

The 24-year-old spent the back end of last season on loan at the claret and blues, and the opportunity for a reunion with Steve Bruce was apparently too much for Johnstone to turn down.

Boro will now have to look for other options, as Garry Monk looks to add a new goalkeeper this summer.

Villa, meanwhile, will be delighted with Johnstone’s expected arrival.

Bruce has been chasing Johnstone for much of the summer so far, but there were fears that he could head elsewhere.

However, Johnstone was known to have enjoyed his loan spell at Villa, and that seems to have give the Midlands side an advantage.

Johnstone is set to be Villa’s number one next term, as Bruce’s side go for promotion.
