Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on the signing of striker Salomon Rondon.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United are closing in on West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon, with the player allegedly on Tyneside now.
The Magpies have so far tied up five new signings this summer, as Martin Dubravka, Fabian Schar, Ki Sung-yueng, Kenedy and Yoshinori Muto have all arrived at St. James’ Park to boost Rafael Benitez’s options.
Despite landing Muto from Mainz just days ago, Newcastle remain keen to add another striker, and a physical target man has been top of Benitez’s wish list after Islam Slimani’s failed loan spell.
Now, The Chronicle report that Newcastle are nearing a deal for West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon, with the Venezuelan currently on Tyneside to secure his move.
Rondon, 28, has emerged as a top Newcastle target this summer, but with a £16.5million release clause in his West Brom contract expiring at the start of August, the Magpies have had to explore other options.
It’s believed that Rondon will join Newcastle on loan for the season with a view to a permanent move, and Magpies hitman Dwight Gayle will seemingly head to West Brom in a similar loan deal as the two clubs swap strikers.
Rondon being in the North East means his move should be finalised imminently, though they may have to wait until Gayle seals his switch to The Hawthorns before they can announce a deal.
Rondon has hit 24 goals in 108 games for West Brom since a 2015 move from Zenit St Petersburg, and will be hoping for better service at Newcastle after a hit-and-miss time with the Baggies.
