Tottenham Hotspur continue to be linked with a move to sign Everton’s Ross Barkley.
According to The Mirror, Everton midfielder Ross Barkley is desperate to join Tottenham Hotspur – but he would be paid less than what the Toffees have offered him to stay.
Spurs have yet to dip into the transfer market so far this summer, and are the only Premier League club not to make a new signing since the end of last season.
Yet, having sold Kyle Walker to Manchester City in a big-money deal, manager Mauricio Pochettino may now have some money to spend on new signings in the final month of the transfer window.
A player linked with Tottenham throughout the transfer window this summer is Everton’s Ross Barkley, and those rumours have taken another turn in the last few hours.
The Mirror report that playmaker Barkley is ‘desperate’ to join Tottenham, but Spurs won’t break their £100,000-a-week wage structure to sign him, as he would be raking in more than top earners Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris.
It’s claimed that Barkley has been offered more than £100,000-a-week to stay with Everton, meaning he would be snubbing a more lucrative offer from the Toffees in order to try and force through his move to Spurs.
Barkley, 23, is out of contract in 2018 so could walk away for nothing, but the report claims that Everton want almost £40million for his signature, and it remains to be seen whether Spurs press ahead with a deal given the huge numbers involved.
England ace Barkley hit five goals and eight assists for Everton last season, but is set to leave Goodison Park having so far refused to sign a new contract, meaning he is expected to depart the club where he has come up through the ranks.
