Everton may be heading into life under new ownership and new management with their primary asset after all, as the Mirror report that Romelu Lukaku has changed his mind about wanting to leave the club and is now ready to sign a new deal.
Lukaku hit 25 goals in 46 appearances for the Toffees last season despite the club’s struggles as they finished in the bottom half of the table for a second season in a row.
That form, coupled with Lukaku’s ambition to play at the very top level of European football, appeared to point towards an inevitable exit this summer, but things have changed a lot since May.
Everton refused to budge on their asking price of at least £60 million, a figure which priced out several interested clubs, and the Belgian striker did not do himself any huge favours with a series of displays at Euro 2016 which were mixed, at best.
Not only that, but the arrival of new owner Farhad Moshiri has allegedly convinced the 23-year-old that he can soon be fulfilling his dream of playing Champions League football at Goodison Park.
According to the Mirror, he is consequently prepared to discuss terms over a new long-term contract at the club, which would likely see him handed a significant pay rise on his current £80,000-per-week wages.
Unsurprisingly, Lukaku is seen as integral to the plans of new manager Ronald Koeman, and it appears as though taking a hard stance on their asking price for the star may just have paid off.
