After a fine season at Olympique Marseille, Roma are reportedly chasing Florian Thauvin – but that is not the news Newcastle United want to hear.
Roma are showing an interest in signing Olympique Marseille winger Florian Thauvin, according to Il Messaggero.
The France international is still officially a Newcastle United player, after a season-long loan back at former club Marseille, but the Chronicle report that the Ligue 1 side have an obligation to make the deal permanent this summer and would then be able to sell the player.
And that clause will cost Newcastle the opportunity to turn a handy profit on Thauvin.
The two reports suggest that Marseille will have to pay just £10million for the 24-year-old, but would then demand a fee in the region of £21m from Roma.
Thauvin enjoyed a fine campaign at the Stade Velodrome, scoring 15 league goals and making his international debut as his value appreciated.
Newcastle had moved Thauvin on last summer after a disappointing first season in England and it seems they will now pay for not taking a gamble on the former Bastia man flourishing.
The Magpies have cut similar deals previously, with Remy Cabella departing, but it looks as though they will be stung on this occasion.
