The Tottenham Hotspur defender has been heavily linked with an exit from the club this summer.
According to a report from Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato, Roma have made a €20 million (£18 million) offer for Tottenham ace Toby Alderweireld, but the north London outfit are not prepared to let him leave for less than his £25 million buy-out clause.
The 30-year-old, who earns £80,000 per week at Spurs (Spotrac), joined the north London club from Atletico Madrid in 2015 for a fee believed to be worth £11.5 million, according to the Telegraph, and he has gone on to make 159 appearances in all competitions for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
He is a vitally important player for Tottenham, but he has just one year remaining on his current contract with the club, and they will be forced to sell him, if they receive a £25 million bid for his services before July 26th.
Alderweireld could, of course, sign a new contract with Spurs, but as things stand, that seems unlikely, because why would they have not offered him terms on a new deal already?
There are still 13 days remaining until the Belgium international’s £25 million buy-out clause expires, and if there are no offers matching that price up until then, Alderweireld might just stay at Tottenham for another season, before leaving on a free transfer in the summer of 2020.
