Brighton are reportedly set to beat Celtic to the signature of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

According to The Mirror, Brighton and Hove Albion are set to beat Celtic in the race to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez on loan for the season.

The Seagulls have already added goalkeeper Mat Ryan and midfielder Pascal Gross to their squad ahead of their maiden Premier League campaign, but manager Chris Hughton is still in the market for further additions.

Having released Vegard Forren and seen Fikayo Tomori return to parent club Chelsea, further defensive reinforcements may be needed for Brighton, and a potential signing who can play across the back four is being linked.

The Mirror report that Brighton are closing in on a deal to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez on loan for the season, and it’s even claimed that Hughton’s men are set to beat Celtic to a deal.

Gomez, 20, joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2015, and whilst he impressed in the early stages of his Anfield career, he suffered a brutal knee injury in October 2015 – and he has played just three times since.

The defender needs playing time next season, and given that he can play at right back, centre back and left back, his versatility may be appealing to manager Hughton as Brighton look to give him first-team football.

Celtic may also have wanted that versatility, and Rodgers – the man who signed Gomez at Liverpool – was seemingly keen to reunite with the young defender ahead of Celtic’s Champions League qualification campaign.

However, with Brighton allegedly set to win the race, Celtic may have to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements this summer.
