Celtic are reportedly closing in on a deal for Portland Timbers star Darlington Nagbe.

According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic are closing in on a £3million deal to sign Portland Timbers playmaker Darlington Nagbe in January.

Bhoys manager Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen his options in midfielder, and Nagbe has emerged as a top target for Celtic over the last month.

The Portland Timbers star travelled to Glasgow towards the end of November for a meeting with Celtic, and watched the Bhoys take on Barcelona in the Champions League as Rodgers’ men rolled out the red carpet for the United States international.

News has been thin on the ground regarding a possible move for Nagbe, but new reports from The Scottish Sun claim that a deal is moving closer.

The report states that significant progress has been made in Celtic’s pursuit of Nagbe, and a deal – potentially worth £3million – is close to being completed ahead of the January transfer window.

Nagbe, 26, was born in Liberia but has made 10 appearances for the United States national team having switched his allegiance in 2015, having moved to America as a five-month-old.

A diminutive playmaker with pace and technical ability, Nagbe has starred for Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer, notching 27 goals in 209 games for the club.

Now, Nagbe is seemingly set for a move to Celtic, and Rodgers is already close to make his first January signing as Bhoys manager – and fans may be keen to see more new faces arrive as Celtic prepare for the Champions League qualifiers next summer, with the Scottish Premiership title all but wrapped up already.
